A good URL reads like a sentence with the noise taken out. This does the taking out.

How it will look
What a good URL looks like
Compare these two:
The second one tells you what the page is before you click it. That matters in search results, in a WhatsApp message, and to anyone deciding whether your link is safe to open.
Five rules
- Hyphens, not underscores. Google reads a hyphen as a space. An underscore joins
the words together, so
google_adscan be read as one word. - Lowercase only. On many servers
/Blogand/blogare two different pages, which quietly splits your traffic. - Three to five words. Enough to be clear, short enough to survive being pasted.
- No dates unless it is news.
/2024-ppc-guidelooks stale in 2026 even after you update it. - No stop words. "how-to-price-your-service" works as well as "how-to-price-your-service-in-2026-for-beginners" and is far easier to share.
The one thing that costs you rankings
Changing a URL after the page is live. Every link anyone ever made to it breaks, and the search engines treat the new address as a brand new page with no history.
If you must change it, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. That passes most of the value across. Without the redirect you are starting again.
Common questions
Should the slug match the page title exactly?
It should contain the main phrase, not the whole title. "How Much Should You Spend on Google Ads in 2026?" becomes "google-ads-budget" or "how-much-spend-google-ads" — either is fine.
Do numbers in URLs hurt SEO?
No. A number that is part of the topic, like "7-ppc-mistakes", is fine. A number that is just a database ID is what you want to avoid.
What about non-English characters?
Modern browsers handle them, but they turn into unreadable percent-encoding when pasted into a message. This tool converts accented letters to their plain equivalents.
How long can a URL be?
Technically thousands of characters. Practically, keep the slug under about 60 so it shows in full in search results.
