What the three match types actually do

TypeYou writeIt can show for
Broadgoogle ads managementAnything Google thinks is related — including "facebook ads help"
Phrase"google ads management"Searches that carry the same meaning, with words before or after
Exact[google ads management]That search and very close variants only
Negative-freeStops the ad showing for that word

Where to start if the budget is small

Start with exact and phrase. They cost more per click and bring less traffic, but almost every click is someone searching for what you sell. Broad match is not bad — it is just expensive to learn on.

Once exact and phrase convert steadily and you have a negative list built from real search terms, adding broad match becomes a growth lever instead of a leak.

The negative list matters more than the match type

The words that waste the most money are almost always the same few: free, jobs, salary, course, how to, diy, template, cheap. Someone searching "how to do google ads" will never hire you.

Tick the negative box above, paste that list of words, and you have a starter negative list in seconds.

Google’s rules

  • Maximum 80 characters per keyword.
  • Maximum 10 words.
  • Match type is not case sensitive — but keeping everything lowercase makes your sheets tidier.

Common questions

Can I paste this straight into Google Ads?

Yes. Copy the output and paste it into the keyword box when you add keywords to an ad group. Google reads one keyword per line and keeps the brackets and quotes as the match type.

Should I still use broad match modifier?

It no longer exists. Google folded broad match modifier into phrase match in 2021, so the plus signs do nothing now. Use phrase match instead.

How many keywords should one ad group have?

Fewer than most people think. Five to twenty closely related keywords is plenty. If the keywords need different ad copy, they belong in different ad groups.

Does this send my keyword list anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
