Ad copy character counter
Write it here first. Nothing is worse than a headline that gets cut off halfway through.

Why a cut-off headline costs real money
When your text runs past the limit, the platform does one of two things: it rejects the ad, or it cuts it off mid-sentence. The second is worse, because the ad keeps running and quietly wastes money while saying something you never wrote.
The limits, in one place
| Where | Field | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Google search | Headline (up to 15) | 30 characters |
| Description (up to 4) | 90 characters | |
| Display path (up to 2) | 15 characters | |
| Facebook & Instagram | Primary text | 125 before "See more" |
| Headline | 40 characters | |
| Description | 30 characters | |
| Intro text | 150 characters | |
| Headline | 70 characters |
Two rules that matter more than the count
- Every headline has to work alone. Google and Meta shuffle your assets. Headline 3 might appear first. If your lines only make sense in order, half your ads will read as nonsense.
- Put the point first. On mobile, Facebook cuts the primary text far earlier than 125 characters in practice. Whatever matters goes in the opening line.
A quick test before you upload
Read your headline out loud without the brand name. If it could belong to any competitor in your industry, it is not a headline — it is a label. "Google Ads Management" is a label. "Stop Paying For Clicks That Never Call" is a headline.
Common questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes. Every space, comma and full stop counts. Emoji often count as two.
Why does Google want 15 headlines?
Responsive search ads test combinations for you. You do not need all 15, but fewer than about eight limits what the system can test. Aim for a mix of benefit, proof and offer.
Can I use exclamation marks and capitals?
One exclamation mark is allowed in Google descriptions and none in headlines. Words in full capitals are rejected, apart from genuine acronyms like SEO or ROI.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. It stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
